Founded between 1865 and 1873 Mount Jezreel Baptist Church stands as a testament to faith and perseverance. Its story began not in a grand edifice but in a humble gathering. Four founding members William Shanklin Peter Gray Abraham Blackmore and Catherine Wilson grew tired of traveling to Vermont Avenue Baptist Church. They yearned for a closer place of worship.
Their first services took place in a modest building on Van Street SE. Mount Jezreel’s congregation expanded rapidly. They soon moved to a larger building on G Street. The late Reverend Temple S Robinson led this period of growth. He tirelessly sought a better location for his growing flock.
In 1879 the church settled into what was known as the old “Meat House” near 7th and L Street SE. But Reverend Robinson’s vision was not contained within these walls. He purchased a lot on the southeast corner of 5th and E Street SE for a modest $900. This purchase represented a significant step in Mount Jezreel’s history.
Calvin Brent a Black Washingtonian builder and designer was hired to construct the new church. The building was modest compared to others of its time. The cornerstone was laid in October 1883. The church’s dedication finally arrived on the first Sunday of November 1888. It was a beautiful edifice valued at approximately $20,000.
Mount Jezreel’s history is rich with stories of dedication. Reverend Robinson’s unwavering commitment shaped the church. His successor Reverend Philip Steward continued the work though challenges arose. Reverend Joseph P Green oversaw the installation of electric lights and further remodeling. Reverend Luther T Hughes served for 39 years becoming known as the “Mighty Man on the Corner”.
Under Reverend Hughes the mortgage was burned in 1941. The adjacent property was purchased in the 1950s. This paved the way for a Christian Education Building dedicated in 1962. Reverend Harold E Trammell led further renovations and revitalization. He fostered the growth of various ministries including the Jezreelite Gospel Choir. He also established the Kiddie Kollege.
The church moved to a new location at 405 Riggs Road NE in 1984. Reverend Trammell’s leadership also saw the establishment of the Mount Jezreel Federal Credit Union. Numerous community outreach programs flourished under his guidance. Reverend Eldridge Spearman became the seventh pastor in 2002.
His tenure marked continued growth and expansion. The church established new ministries and outreach programs. Missions trips broadened the church’s reach. In 2018 a senior living facility The Sanctuary was opened. Reverend Dr Jamison Douglas Hytche Hunter became the eighth pastor in 2020. He focused on technological advancements. He also worked on renovations including the addition of a baptismal pool.
Mount Jezreel Baptist Church’s enduring legacy is a testament to the power of faith. This place of worship built on a foundation of perseverance and community engagement continues to serve its people. It stands today a beacon of hope and spiritual guidance.
