“This is holy ground,” declares the inscription. These words set the tone as we approach Mount Horeb Baptist Church. Founded in 1870 Mount Horeb has a rich history. It reflects faith and community in Washington D.C.
Mount Horeb began with a small group. These members came from Fifth Baptist Church. They gathered for prayer meetings on Warren Street Northeast. For nine years they worshiped there. The growing membership soon needed more space.
In 1879 Reverend Madison Lewis became the third pastor. He arranged to build a church on 16th Street Northeast. In 1880 Mount Horeb Baptist Church was officially incorporated. That same year some members formed Israel Baptist Church.
Reverend Dr. Randolph V. Peyton became pastor in 1886. During his time Mount Horeb grew significantly. The church was renovated and the sanctuary enlarged. Peyton was known as a great orator. People saw him as a progressive young pastor.
Reverends Alfred J. Tyler, Marzy V. Morris and J.T. Clark followed. During Reverend Clark’s leadership the Senior Choir became famous. It was considered the best church choir in D.C. Some members then established Peace Baptist Church.
In 1918 Reverend Charles Fox became the eighth pastor of Mount Horeb. The church building was remodeled and expanded. It gained a study, kitchen, restrooms and a baptismal pool. Several groups were organized including the Tribe of Judah.
Reverend Gregory Trueheart became pastor in 1952. Under his leadership Mount Horeb grew spiritually and financially. Collection plates were removed in 1956. Members placed tithes in depositories. The church affiliated with several organizations.
A new building became necessary. Land was purchased in 1977. The new Mount Horeb building was dedicated in 1978. Reverend Trueheart’s tenure ended in 1986.
Reverend Delmas U. Cooper was elected pastor in 1988. Many new ministries were organized. The church bought properties on Bladensburg Road and Earl Place. The Mount Horeb Plaza was renovated.
In 2010 Reverend Dr. H.B. Sampson III became the eleventh pastor. Mount Horeb experienced growth. He initiated new ministries. These included Liturgical Dance and Narcotics Anonymous.
Administrative improvements were made. These included office renovations and new financial systems. The Mount Horeb Annex was renamed the Mount Horeb Baptist Church Family Life Center.
Mount Horeb continues to thrive. It stands as a testament to faith community and service. It has dedicated leaders and faithful members. The church actively participates in the city’s urban renewal. Mount Horeb Baptist Church enriches the community. It offers programs and encourages participation. It strengthens the social welfare.
