Mount Horeb Baptist Church has seen eleven pastors guide its flock. Reverend William Gresham and James Holmes started it all. Reverend Madison Lewis oversaw the church’s incorporation in 1880. A pivotal moment. The same year some members left to form Israel Baptist Church. A friendly split.
Reverend Randolph V Peyton led the church through significant growth. He was a respected community figure a great orator. He even served before becoming pastor of Rising Sixth Mount Zion Baptist Church in Richmond Virginia.
Reverend Charles Fox’s tenure brought major renovations. The church got electricity a kitchen even a baptismal pool. He oversaw the creation of numerous clubs and service groups. A bustling community hub.
Under Reverend Gregory Trueheart’s leadership Mount Horeb thrived. He introduced innovative practices including eliminating collection plates in 1956. He also established a benevolence fund. A vital support system for members. He also founded Mount Horeb Federal Credit Union.
Reverend Delmas U Cooper continued the growth. The church expanded acquiring properties on Bladensburg Road. Renovations transformed the Mount Horeb Plaza into a community center. This included a recreation center and administrative offices.
Reverend Dr H B Sampson III the current pastor has brought about new ministries. These include a liturgical dance ministry a Narcotics Anonymous ministry and a cancer support ministry. He also focused on youth involvement. He even helped redefine the culture of the church.
