Mount Hope Baptist Church

In 1858, near Mannboro, Virginia, a beacon of faith emerged. Mount Hope Baptist Church began its journey. H.C. Gregory’s generous donation of two acres of land allowed the first frame church building to rise. The Reverend Gilbert Mason guided the nascent congregation. Mount Hope Baptist Church quickly grew, adding seventeen new members by January 1859. The church fostered education early on. The first Sunday school was established in May 1866. T. B. Sadler served as Superintendent. R. W. Gill was his Assistant Superintendent. E.L. Cousins served as Clerk. The church continued to evolve. A Women’s Missionary Union was organized in 1917. Tragedy struck on March 18, 1956. Lightning from a violent thunderstorm ignited a fire that consumed the church building. Undeterred, the congregation rallied. They launched a building program, and on July 14, 1957, a new debt-free Mount Hope Baptist Church was dedicated. Growth and progress continued. In 1990, another building program commenced. The cornerstone was laid during the 1991 revival. Members and friends contributed labor and materials, creating a new addition. This addition housed a kitchen, handicapped-accessible restroom, fellowship hall, two classrooms, a computer room, and a pastor’s study. An outside ramp ensured accessibility for everyone. This new chapter for Mount Hope Baptist Church officially began on February 19, 1993.
