Atop a gentle hill, Mount Harmony United Methodist Church stands as a beacon. It beckons to those seeking solace and community. This isn’t the Mount Harmony in North Carolina. This Mount Harmony thrives in Owings, Maryland. Let’s journey back to the mid-1800s. Picture the Methodist movement sweeping across Maryland. Small house churches dotted the landscape, nurtured by traveling pastors known as “circuit riders.” One such circuit, formed in 1882, was the Smithville circuit. This included three churches: Smithville in Dunkirk, Mount Harmony, and Lower Marlboro in Owings. Mount Harmony United Methodist Church has a rich history intertwined with this circuit. For 98 years, these three churches shared a common bond. Then in 1980, Smithville became its own entity. This left Mount Harmony and Lower Marlboro to forge a new path together. They became the Mount Harmony-Lower Marlboro United Methodist Charge. The story continues in 1994. The two churches became a blended parish under Reverend Russell McClatchey. A milestone was reached in 1997. Mount Harmony United Methodist Church celebrated 150 years of faith and community. Today, Mount Harmony United Methodist Church embraces its unique identity. It serves as a spiritual home for many. In addition to their main location, they also hold services at the Lower Marlboro Church. They even have a separate community building called “The Hall” at Lower Marlboro. This space hosts a variety of events. Dinner theaters, yard sales, and after-school programs all find a home at “The Hall”. The church strives to be “like Jesus Christ as faithful servants ministering to one another, the community and beyond.” This mission resonates through their various ministries and outreach programs. They offer Sunday services at both locations. There is even a Zoom option for those who prefer to worship remotely. Mount Harmony United Methodist Church isn’t just a building. It’s a testament to the enduring power of faith, community, and service.
