Founded in 1984 Mount Ennon Missionary Baptist Church stands as a testament to faith and community. This church wasn’t built overnight. It began in the home of Deacon and Sister Harold Brown. A small group of dedicated believers met there. They laid a firm foundation based on prayer and careful consideration. Reverend W J Mason led them. He emphasized God’s role not human ambition. Charter members included Reverend Anthony Lee Deacon Harold Brown Sister Nellie Mason and others.
Their first service was held in April 1984 at 1205 K Street NW Washington DC. Imagine the excitement. A new church beginning its journey. The church school followed at 9 30 AM. Thursday evenings brought Bible study. A Missionary Society formed that April. Sister Helen Green became its first president. An Adult Usher Board was also organized. Sister Burneise led this vital group.
June 1984 became “Use Your Talent Month.” Brother Dennis McCrae donated $500 to the cause. Members used the money to develop their gifts. The church benefitted greatly. Later in the year a youth revival brought several new members into the fold. The Fall Revival featured Reverend Roscoe D Cooper from Richmond VA. A Senior Choir was also established. Sister Effie Morton was appointed president.
Tragedy struck in March 1985. Pastor Mason passed away. Deacon Harold Brown took over. He guided the church until Reverend Cleveland Mason became the pastor. They moved to 1325 Branch Avenue SE in 1986. Reverend Mason initiated Biblical Evangelism Training. This program boosted the members’ faith and confidence. A unique television ministry “Word of Life” aired on DCTV.
After more moves Reverend Sterling Swann became pastor in 1993. His leadership was pivotal. He oversaw the purchase of the current building at 329 34th Street SE. He expanded programs and ministries. This included the Youth and Young Adult Ministry. After Reverend Swann’s departure Deacon Harold Brown again filled the void. Reverend Tracy R Shepperson became the pastor in 2006. His installation service took place in 2007. Mount Ennon Missionary Baptist Church continues to thrive today a testament to its enduring faith and strong community spirit.
