High above Miramar sprawls Mount Crawford a peak steeped in history. Its summit once held Wellington Prison a place of confinement and untold stories.

Mount Crawford’s imposing presence dominates the Miramar Peninsula. It stands as a silent witness to centuries of change. From its heights one can see Wellington Harbour Cook Strait and the distant ranges.

The prison opened in 1927 replacing the older Terrace Gaol. It was fully operational by 1929. Four men were hanged within its walls during the 1930s. The prison also boasted a large garden. Prisoners cultivated the land growing food for themselves and even the Wellington Zoo. The garden’s rich soil provided sustenance for decades. The greenhouse itself a testament to prisoner ingenuity. It was designed by a returned soldier and built around 1940.

The prison closed in 2012. The buildings fell into disrepair. The site became a dumping ground. The area’s history however endures. Its significance for Maori remains. The land holds a sacred meaning. It’s a site of ancient settlements and pa. It witnessed significant historical events including attacks during the Musket Wars.

Today the former prison site is a source of debate. There are plans to build hundreds of homes. This proposal faces opposition from some iwi. They believe the land is too sacred for development. They envision a national heritage park. A place to tell the stories of the many iwi who called Mount Crawford home. The future of this site remains uncertain. Its rich past however remains etched into the very land itself. Mount Crawford will endure. Its story will continue to be told.
