How high is Mount Colah really? Higher than you might think. Mount Colah isn’t just a name it’s the second highest suburb in all of Sydney. That’s right second highest. This leafy haven nestled 24 kilometers north of the city’s bustling center boasts breathtaking views and a rich history.
Initially known simply as Colah the area gained its current name in 1906. This happened after Hornsby Shire was proclaimed. The name Colah itself is a tribute to the koala. Naturalist George Caley first used it in a letter to Sir Joseph Banks. The koala thus gave its name to this wonderful area.
Mount Colah’s elevation ranges from a modest 68 meters to a remarkable 206-217 meters above sea level. This variation offers diverse landscapes. Imagine walking through streets named after Arthurian legends. Sprigg Place Arthurs Circle and Camelot Close are all real places here. You can almost feel the magic in the air.
But Mount Colah’s charm isn’t only found in its names and elevation. The Pacific Highway runs through the heart of this suburb. It’s also bordered by the stunning Ku-ring-gai Chase National Park. It’s no wonder cycling is so popular here. The Bush to Bridge cycling club even commutes daily from Mount Colah to the city. It is truly a fantastic place to live.
In 1988 the Pacific Motorway was built through Mount Colah. It sliced through a World War II gravel airstrip. Some remnants of that era can still be seen today. A reminder of a time long past. Mount Colah also has a vibrant community life. Three playing fields host local sports clubs. This includes a soccer club and a cricket club. Mount Colah Public School which opened in 1953 replacing an asparagus farm is a significant landmark in the area. The school’s hall even serves as the local polling place.
In 2010 Mount Colah achieved national recognition. An online poll declared it Australia’s Best Suburb. Not bad for a place with such a rich history. A wonderful place to visit or live.
