“Founded in 1971.” That’s the year that Mount Calvary Holy Church of Deliverance began its journey right here in Washington D.C. This church is more than just a building. It’s a testament to faith, resilience, and community.

Mount Calvary’s story starts with Elder Emerson L. Brockington, Sr. He established the church on 7th Street, NW. Tragedy struck when a fire forced them to relocate. The congregation found a new home at 1618 8th Street, NW.

But the story of Mount Calvary doesn’t begin in Washington D.C. Bishop P.B. Gray founded the Holy Churches of Deliverance in 1942. It started as a mission in Hampton, Virginia. Members opened their homes for services. God blessed their efforts and they built a church at 532 Shell Road. Mount Calvary is a branch of this organization. It also serves as the headquarters for the Holy Churches of Deliverance.

The congregation of Mount Calvary grew steadily. By 1987, they had enough funds to build a new facility. They moved to their current location at 5900 Chillum Place NE. In June 1987, Elder Emerson Lee Brockington, Sr. became Bishop. He oversaw churches in North Carolina, Virginia, and D.C.

Bishop E.D. Brockington expanded the church’s ministries. He created new groups to serve the growing congregation and community. Mount Calvary became increasingly responsive under his leadership.

Even during the COVID-19 pandemic, Mount Calvary remained connected. They held virtual Bible studies and in-sanctuary worship services. The church prioritized safety. They followed guidelines from the CDC and local government. Although restrictions have eased, they respect individual choices regarding masks and social distancing.

Mount Calvary Holy Church of Deliverance offers various services. Sunday worship takes place at 11:00 AM. Weekly Bible studies occur on Tuesdays and Thursdays via Zoom. Friday night prayer is also held via Zoom.

Mount Calvary hosts several annual events. These include the Annual Workers’ Meeting. There is also an Annual Men, Women & Youth Conference. Additionally, the Annual Junior Convention takes place.

Mount Calvary is more than just a church. It is a place where people can grow in faith. Members describe it as a place where they feel the presence of the Lord. They appreciate Bishop Brockington’s dedication to living by the Word of God.

Mount Calvary Holy Church of Deliverance stands as a beacon of hope and faith in the community. It is a place where all are welcome to worship and grow together. Its history is a testament to the power of faith and community.
