Could a simple mound hold the key to a medieval knight’s tale? Here at the Motte Wiebershausen, also known as Motte Niederscherf, a subtle rise in the earth whispers stories of a forgotten era. Motte Wiebershausen is more than just a bump in the landscape. It’s the weathered remains of a turmhügelburg, a type of motte-and-bailey castle, nestled in the Scherfbach Valley in Odenthal, a quiet corner of Germany’s North Rhine-Westphalia. This modest mound, barely two meters high and 25 meters across, was once a stronghold, a symbol of power in the 11th or 12th century. Imagine the scene: a wooden tower rising proudly from the earth, surrounded by a network of walls and ditches. The Scherfbach river on one side, a natural barrier, and a cleverly engineered system of water channels on the other. This wasn’t just a defensive measure; it was a display of ingenuity. The knights of Motte Wiebershausen harnessed the power of the valley’s natural drainage and rainfall. They created a system of interconnected basins, likely for fish farming, but potentially also for flooding the area around the motte in times of attack. The ground, even today, is marshy, a testament to their watery defenses. A wooden bridge, long gone, would have connected the outer bailey to the central mound. Atop this mound, the wooden tower stood, the heart of the Motte Wiebershausen. Geomagnetic surveys reveal a smaller structure within the mound, perhaps the stone foundations of this lost tower. It paints a picture of a small, but formidable fortress. This Motte Wiebershausen was likely the ancestral seat of the Knights of Scherf, first mentioned in historical records in 1216. One of their own, Knight Lambert de Scherve, even joined the Fifth Crusade in 1218. The very coat of arms of the Knights of Odenthal reportedly featured “a hill surrounded by a stream,” a striking image mirroring the Motte Wiebershausen itself. Eventually, the seat of power shifted to the Burghaus Amtmannscherf further up the Scherfbach. Yet, here at Motte Wiebershausen, the echoes of their presence remain, a hidden gem waiting to be rediscovered.
