Did you know that Turin houses a mosque that stands as a testament to cultural integration? This is the Moschea di Mohammed IV. It is a beacon for the Muslim community. Let’s uncover its story.

The Moschea di Mohammed IV is located in the Nizza Millefonti district. It sits near Piazza Bengasi. This places it on the border with Moncalieri. Its location reflects Turin’s diverse urban landscape.

Turin has about fifteen Muslim places of prayer. Yet, the Moschea di Mohammed IV is unique. It is the only one recognized as an official mosque. This recognition underscores its importance to the community.

After much debate, Via Genova 268 became its home. This choice transformed a former cinema. The interior spans 1100 square meters. The prayer hall occupies 800 square meters. A balcony for women covers 300 square meters. Architect Demetrio Foti designed this transformation.

Construction began in 2010. It concluded in 2013. Islamic authorities of Turin promoted the project. Abdelghani El Rhalmi and Mohamed El Yandouzi spearheaded the effort. On July 6, 2013, the mosque opened. Various authorities attended the inauguration.

The Lega Nord party protested the event. Despite the controversy, the mosque became a reality. The Al-Waqf Foundation played a crucial role later. It helped clear debts. This ensured the Islamic center became property of the Muslims.

Devotees donated decorations and furnishings. Natural light fills the prayer hall. An air conditioning system regulates air quality. This creates a comfortable space for worship.

The Moschea di Mohammed IV follows Sunni Islam. Both Italian and foreign Muslims gather here. They pray and read the Quran daily. Despite its recent establishment, it is well-structured. The Islamic Cultural Center of Italy organizes events. These include cultural exchange meetings. Language courses are offered. They cater to men, women, and children.

The mosque is part of the Federazione Islamica del Piemonte. It also adheres to a sharing agreement. This agreement involves Turin’s Islamic community. This collaboration promotes unity and understanding.

So, the Moschea di Mohammed IV represents more than a place of worship. It symbolizes community, culture, and integration in Turin. Its story reflects dedication and unity. It enriches the city’s diverse tapestry.
