The Mortdale Oatley Baptist Church is part of a large Baptist family. Baptists are at the heart of mainstream Christianity. The movement began in the early 17th century. About 50 people fled religious persecution in England. They moved to Amsterdam. John Smyth was their pastor. Thomas Helwys was their social leader. In Amsterdam, they met Mennonites. Mennonites only baptized believers. Smyth studied the Bible. He became convinced. His congregation followed. Smyth baptized himself. Then he baptized Helwys in 1609.

When Smyth died, most joined the Mennonites. Helwys and about a quarter returned to England. In 1612, they formed the first English Baptist church. It was in Spitalfields, just outside London.

Baptist principles have grown since then. Today, it is one of the largest denominations. Baptists have always valued religious liberty. This means freedom from compulsion in faith.

Baptists arrived in Australia in 1831. This was just forty years after the British penal colony began. Today, over 300,000 Christians belong to more than 800 Baptist churches across Australia.

Most Baptist churches manage their own affairs. Many work together. They support Christian ministry. The Mortdale Oatley Baptist Church is with the Association of Baptist Churches in NSW & ACT. This group includes about 330 churches and over 50,000 people.

The Mortdale-Oatley Baptist Church was established around 1896. The first church was built in 1903. It stood at the corner of Pitt Street and the Strand. In 1926, the church moved. The Hall moved too. They went to the corner of Boundary Road and Woronora Parade. A new brick church opened in 1928. It was enlarged in 1958.

Reverend John Baillie set a foundation stone in 1927. He was the pastor.
