Have you ever wondered where faith and heritage intertwine? The Moriah SDA Church stands as a testament to both. This isn’t just a church. It is a landmark in a village steeped in tradition. Moriah is known for its significant role in Tobago’s cultural landscape.

The Moriah SDA Church is located in the village of Moriah. This village is famed for its “Ole Time Wedding” at the Tobago Heritage Festival. The festival began in 1987. J.D. Elder, Secretary of Culture in the Tobago House of Assembly, was its creator. The festival had three goals. It aimed to develop a recognizable event for Tobago. It sought to preserve indigenous art forms. It also wanted to boost Tobago’s tourism and development.

Moriah was one of the five villages that participated in the inaugural festival. Each village showcased its unique traditions. Moriah presented the “Ole Time Wedding”. This tradition reflects European influence on Tobagonian customs. The wedding is a re-enactment of old-fashioned Tobago weddings. Men dress in black top hats and three-piece suits. Women wear bustle dresses and wide-brimmed hats adorned with flowers. The wedding includes heckling of the bride and groom by family members. Fiddles, drums, and tambrins provide music as the wedding party moves from the church to the wedding grounds. Here, the bride’s godfather gives a speech filled with misused big words.

The Moriah SDA Church is more than a backdrop to this cultural event. It symbolizes the community’s enduring values. The church is a place where faith and community come together. Moriah’s “Ole Time Wedding” remains a major attraction at the Tobago Heritage Festival. It draws visitors from around the world. The festival has grown since 1987. Seventeen villages participated in 2015. It significantly contributes to Tobago’s tourism industry.
