Did you know Mörby once echoed with the sounds of a late Iron Age settlement? Today, Mörby is more than just a memory of ancient times. It is a vibrant area in Danderyd Municipality. It’s located in Stockholm County.
Mörby’s story stretches back to the late Iron Age. The original settlement was near a Baltic Sea bay. Post-glacial rebound changed the landscape over time. The bay became Edsviken. The name Mörby might come from this transformation. It could mean “Myr-byn” or “Marsh Village”.
In the 1400s, 1500s, and 1600s, Mörby gård was part of the Djursholm estate. Mörby gård was classified as a historic building in 1944. The main building and wings underwent major renovations in 1951. Sadly, a fire destroyed the farm in 1976. It stood between Norrtäljevägen and Danderyd Hospital. The area got its name from this farm.
Today, Mörby includes several areas. These are Mörbyskogen, Mörby centrum and Mörbylund. Danderyd Hospital is also part of Mörby. Until 1964, it was known as Mörby lasarett. A residential area incorporated into Stocksund Municipality in 1913 is also here. This villa community was mainly for government officials. The plots were leased. By 1917, 94 villas had been built in Mörby. Mörbyskolan and Mörbybadet are also in the area. Mörbyskolan was previously Mörby Läroverk.
Mörby station is on the Roslagsbanan narrow gauge railway. It opened in 1906. The station is near Danderyd Hospital metro station. A short walk connects them. The primary maintenance shop for Roslagsbanan is south of the station. It is called Mörby verkstäder. In 2019, Mörby station saw 2400 boarding passengers each weekday.
Mörby centrum is a shopping mall in Danderyd Municipality. Mörby centrum metro station is a part of the Stockholm metro system. Mörby also has a railway station on Roslagsbanan.
