Towering before us stands the Monumento a Duque de Caxias a colossal tribute to one of Brazil’s most celebrated military heroes. This isn’t just a statue it’s a testament to a life a legacy and a complex historical figure.
The Monumento a Duque de Caxias is more than just bronze and granite. It’s a 48-meter-high masterpiece by Victor Brecheret a renowned Brazilian sculptor. Imagine a building ten stories high. That’s the scale of this equestrian statue.
The story begins in 1939. General Mauricio Jose Cardoso spearheaded a fundraising drive. The goal To create a fitting monument to the Duque de Caxias in Sao Paulo. No monument existed. This sparked an international competition in 1941.
Thirty sculptors competed. Victor Brecheret’s design prevailed. His vision a powerful statue of the Duke on horseback. Surrounding the central figure are detailed bas-reliefs. They depict key moments in the Duque’s life. We see scenes of peacemaking battles and even his funeral.
The base is adorned with granite. Each section tells a unique part of the Duque’s story. Note the details of the Pacification scene. The scene of Caxias addressing the people of Bage. Observe the Battle of Itororo. Even the somber moment of his burial.
The bronze figure of the Duke himself is striking. It weighs approximately 18 tons. It was cast in the Liceu de Artes e Oficios de Sao Paulo. Brecheret’s own alma mater. The statue reflects a classical style. It shows the clear influence of European heroic monuments. Brecheret however infused it with his unique Brazilian spirit.
The monument’s location wasn’t decided easily. Brecheret envisioned it in Praca da Bandeira near the Aluminum Theatre. It eventually found its home in Praca Princesa Isabel. A location initially rejected.
Sadly Brecheret passed away in 1955. He didn’t live to see his masterpiece unveiled in 1960.
