“Look at that woman carved into the stone!” a child’s voice rang out, echoing through the playground. You might think this is just another playground fountain, but the Monumentalbrunnen mit Steinrelief und Sitzbänken has a story to tell. This fountain, built in 1929, isn’t just a place to cool off. It’s a monument to history, built on the grounds of what was once the Oberstrass Cemetery. Two talented sculptors, Julius Schwyzer and Louis Wethli Junior, brought this fountain to life. Picture this: a semi-circular wall, not unlike an embrace, with benches inviting you to sit and contemplate. At its heart lies a basin, mirroring the wall’s shape, watched over by the reclining figure of a woman. She rests on one elbow, her gaze seemingly lost in the distance, perhaps pondering the stories these very grounds could tell. The woman, forever frozen in stone, and the basin itself are crafted from Würenlos stone. On either side of the basin, you’ll find drinking fountains, a testament to the city’s commitment to providing fresh water. While the central fountain jet is no more, the Iragna granite steps and base remain, whispering tales of time gone by.
