Montgomery Hills Baptist Church

In 1912, a seed was planted. This seed was the idea for Montgomery Hills Baptist Church. It began in Petworth, Washington D.C. as the Petworth Baptist Church. The first service at Montgomery Hills Baptist Church was held on December 29, 1912. The congregation initially met in a rented space. They eventually built their first church. They were on the outskirts of the city. Farmland stretched to the north. They were known as the “Friendly Church.” The church grew steadily. Decades later, the congregation felt a pull towards Montgomery Hills. They purchased land on Georgia Avenue in Silver Spring, Maryland. They held their first services there in a rented house on Woodland Drive in 1955. A new church building was completed on Georgia Avenue and Forest Glen Road in 1957. For a time, the church operated in both locations. The Petworth location held its final service on January 13, 1963. The entire congregation united at the Montgomery Hills location on January 20, 1963. The current sanctuary and educational wing were completed in 1965. Montgomery Hills Baptist Church continued to evolve. They shared their space with a Korean Baptist Congregation. They renovated the sanctuary in 1987. They welcomed members from the Bethany Baptist Church of Washington, D.C. in 1986. More recently, they made the entire building handicap accessible with a new elevator. Montgomery Hills Baptist Church has a rich history of service and community. They invite everyone to belong, grow, and serve.
