Remarkable isn’t it? This very spot the Montgomery County Courthouse has witnessed history unfold for nearly 240 years. Imagine court proceedings in 1777 held not in a grand building but in a humble tavern. This wasn’t just any tavern though. It was Leonard Davis’s tavern serving as the county’s first courtroom. He even had to provide for the reception of prisoners.

The Montgomery County Courthouse you see before you is actually the fourth courthouse built on this site. The first purpose-built courthouse was a simple wooden structure erected around 1785. It proved too small by 1810 needing a separate building for the clerk’s records. A more substantial brick courthouse followed in 1840. Rockville was growing it was becoming a hub of government commerce and community life. This building too became outdated.

Then came the masterpiece we admire today. The Red Brick Courthouse completed in 1891. Designed by Baltimore architect Frank E Davis its Romanesque Revival style is truly stunning. The design emphasized the courthouse’s importance. Local Seneca sandstone adds to its charm. It cost $45000 a significant sum for its time. The building housed offices record storage and of course the grand courtroom.

But the Red Brick Courthouse almost wasn’t. It faced threats of demolition multiple times. In the 1960s and 1970s complaints arose that it was unsafe unsightly and even smelly. However each time concerned citizens rallied. Architects historians residents even schoolchildren fought to preserve this architectural gem. Their collective efforts saved the Montgomery County Courthouse from the wrecking ball.

Today the Montgomery County Courthouse remains a symbol of justice and community. It stands as a testament to the resilience of a community that treasures its past. It isn’t just a building it’s a living breathing part of Rockville’s rich history. A landmark that continues to serve the people of Montgomery County. It reminds us that history matters. That preserving our heritage is vital for future generations. This building breathes life into our shared history. It’s a story written in red brick and stone. A story waiting to be discovered one brick at a time.
