Across the rushing Monocacy River stands the magnificent Monocacy Aqueduct. It’s a testament to American engineering, a stone giant holding a waterway to the sky. The Monocacy Aqueduct, also known as C&O Canal Aqueduct No. 2, is the largest of eleven aqueducts built along the Chesapeake and Ohio Canal. This canal, started in 1828, stretched from Georgetown to Cumberland, Maryland. It stands as the most complete canal system from its era, a time when canals were the highways of commerce. The C&O Canal’s chief engineer, Benjamin Wright, a man considered the father of American civil engineering, designed this marvel. He envisioned the Monocacy Aqueduct as the crowning jewel of the canal, and many historians agree with his assessment. It is often called one of the finest canal features in the United States.
Construction on the Monocacy Aqueduct began in 1829. Three different contractors worked over four years to complete this immense structure at a cost of $127,900. Imagine the scene: hundreds of workers, many of them Irish immigrants and enslaved laborers, hauling massive blocks of quartzite from nearby Sugarloaf Mountain. These stones, some weighing tons, were carefully fitted together to form the seven graceful arches, each spanning 54 feet, that support the aqueduct. The waterway itself is 19 feet wide at the bottom, widening to 20 feet at the top, and the entire structure stretches an impressive 516 feet across the Monocacy River.
The Monocacy Aqueduct has witnessed history unfold beneath its arches. During the Civil War, the canal served as a vital supply route for Union troops. This made it a target for Confederate forces. One story tells of a lock keeper named Thomas Walter, a Southern sympathizer, who loved the aqueduct more than his cause. He managed to convince Confederate General D.H. Hill that draining the canal, rather than destroying the aqueduct, would be sufficient to disrupt Union traffic. Later, another Confederate attempt to blow up the structure failed. The soldiers couldn’t penetrate the hard quartzite with enough holes to place the explosives.
The Monocacy Aqueduct has also faced the fury of nature. Floods, including the devastating Hurricane Agnes in 1972, have threatened its stability. After Agnes, the National Park Service, recognizing the aqueduct’s historical importance, implemented a steel banding system to reinforce the structure. In the early 2000s, a major restoration project returned the Monocacy Aqueduct to its former glory. Today, the Monocacy Aqueduct stands as a tribute to ingenuity and perseverance, a silent witness to the flow of history and the power of nature. It reminds us of a time when water was the lifeblood of commerce and when structures like this connected the nation.
