“Have you come to pay respects or simply admire?” That’s the question Monk Rock seems to pose to every visitor. Monk Rock stands tall on Po Toi Island. It is one of the island’s most famous rock formations.

Po Toi Island is the southernmost island of Hong Kong. It offers a peaceful escape from the bustling city. The island is known for its strange rock formations. Monk Rock is just one of them. Others include the Buddha’s Palm Cliff, the Coffin Rock, and the Tortoise Rock.

Monk Rock resembles a religious man. He has his head raised in contemplation. He seems to be looking out to sea. Some say the Tortoise Rock appears to have stopped for a rest in front of the monk. It looks like it is taking a break after climbing the hill. These rock formations spark creativity. They offer unique photo opportunities.

Po Toi Island is not only famous for its rock formations. It also has ancient rock carvings. These carvings date back to the Bronze Age around 1500–700 BC. They were discovered in the 1960s and have been declared monuments of Hong Kong since 1979.

Historically, about 1,000 fishermen and farmers lived on Po Toi. They made their living from fishing, farming, and seaweed harvesting. The population lived mainly in two villages: Chang Shek Pai and Shan Liu. Over the past decades, the population has decreased sharply. Younger generations have moved to the city.

Today, Po Toi is a recognized village. It has become an important birding hotspot in Hong Kong. Over 350 species have been recorded here. Po Toi offers hiking trails with amazing coastal views. Before setting off, try the local “hiker fuel”. This is luncheon meat noodles with home-grown seaweed.

To reach Po Toi, you can take a ferry from Aberdeen or Stanley. The ferry schedules vary, so check the government website.

As you stand before Monk Rock, consider its silent vigil. Po Toi’s Monk Rock is a testament to nature’s artistry. It is also a reminder of the island’s rich history and peaceful beauty.
