Elevated on a hill overlooking Loděnice, the Monastery of St. Wenceslas and St. Ludmila stands as a testament to transformation. This wasn’t always a place of quiet contemplation. The original structure, built in 1873 by Prague entrepreneur Antonín Cífka, was a bustling family estate. It even boasted what some claim was the first tennis court in Bohemia! Imagine the lively games played here, the laughter echoing through the vineyards. These vineyards, by the way, produced a wine known throughout Austria-Hungary. It wasn’t a large production, more of a novelty, but the “Loděnice” label carried a certain prestige. The Monastery of St. Wenceslas and St. Ludmila has seen many changes since those days. After World War I, the estate housed a liqueur distillery, a missionary school, and various offices. Its ownership changed hands several times. After 1948, neglect set in, leaving the once grand estate uninhabitable. The construction of the nearby D5 highway further diminished its appeal. The Monastery of St. Wenceslas and St. Ludmila sat neglected, fading from memory, until its acquisition by the Orthodox Church in 2008. A Russian investor funded its restoration, transforming it into the spiritual center we see today. While the renovations, completed in 2010, have been criticized for straying from the original aesthetic, they’ve undoubtedly saved the structure from ruin. The new golden, Orthodox crosses atop the towers now gleam in the sun. A new bell tower stands near the restored vineyards, housing ten bells rung every Sunday by the nuns themselves. Inside the Monastery of St. Wenceslas and St. Ludmila, you’ll find not only the cloister and a spiritual retreat center, but also a chapel in the former cellar and a shop selling religious items and books. The bell concert, played by the nuns with both hands and feet, is a unique experience. The Monastery of St. Wenceslas and St. Ludmila stands as a beacon of faith and resilience, its story woven into the very fabric of Loděnice.
