“Opened in 1907!” Can you imagine the echoes of hymns sung within these walls for over a century? This is Mona Vale Anglican Church. It stands as a testament to faith in the heart of Mona Vale.

Mona Vale Anglican Church has a rich history. Its story began long before this stone structure stood here. The church’s origins trace back to 1871. At that time, the rector from St Matthew’s Manly journeyed to Barrenjoey lighthouse. He conducted occasional services for the growing communities. He recognized the need for local churches.

The first St John’s Anglican Church was built overlooking Bongan Bongan beach. It was the first church in the region. Imagine the sea breeze mixing with the scent of hymn books.

By 1881, the community’s center shifted. Residents moved closer to Mona Vale township. So the church followed. It was moved to Winnererremy Estate. This is now part of the golf course on Pittwater Road. Picture a bullock wagon. It hauled the entire church. It became bogged for two weeks.

By 1906, the wooden church had seen better days. It had deteriorated significantly. A new stone church was needed. This is the church we see today. It opened in 1907. It has been a spiritual home ever since.

Mona Vale Anglican Church has evolved over the years. Between 1920 and 1952, it was part of the Narrabeen parish. This included Narrabeen, Mona Vale, Newport, Avalon, and Palm Beach. In 1961, Mona Vale Anglican became the center of its own provisional district. It finally received its first resident minister.

The church has seen many changes. In 1982, a significant extension was added to the 1907 building. This provided more space for the growing congregation. In 2004, a new family service was launched. It later relocated to Mona Vale Anglican Church.

Mona Vale Anglican also has partnerships. They work with Anglicare. They also support World Vision. They broaden their engagement with the community. They even support churches in Darwin and Alice Springs.

The church has had many dedicated leaders. Rev. Ron Coleman ministered faithfully for 22 years. Rev. John Reid was welcomed in 2000. He continues to encourage growth in faith.

Today, Mona Vale Anglican stands as a beacon. It testifies to the enduring power of faith. It makes a difference for eternity. As you stand here, consider the generations who have found solace and community within these walls.
