Deep beneath our feet flows a hidden treasure. This treasure feeds not just our bodies but also our history. We are standing before the Mombach Quelle. It is Stuttgart’s only naturally occurring spring.
The Mombach Quelle is a unique source of mineral water. It emerges from the ground in a natural pool. This sets it apart from other springs in Stuttgart. Those springs are often enclosed.
Unfortunately, direct access to the spring is limited. The actual Quelltopf remains behind a barrier. You can glimpse it from a nearby Freibad but only for a fee. A citizen proposal in 2013 suggested improving access. The plan was rejected by the local council.
But don’t let this discourage you. The water from the Mombach Quelle serves an important purpose. It helps supply the Leuze Mineralbad and Cannstatter Mineralbad. This water feeds the showers and warm pools.
The Mombachquelle is not one of Bad Cannstatt’s highly mineralized springs. Yet its contribution is significant. The water travels to the Rosensteinpark. From there, it helps sustain the Wilhelma. It also flows through the green space along Krefelder Strasse. It goes under Neckartalstrasse. Finally, it empties into the Neckar River.
The spring itself lies close to the Alfred-Reichle-Bad. The Mombach stream flows from the spring through a small park. In 1982, a pipe was installed. This pipe connects the spring to a pumping station.
The area around Mombach Quelle offers more than just the spring. The green space extends as a rectangle. It lies between Neckartalstrasse and the Schwimmverein Cannstatt e.V. bath. It continues as a narrow strip. This strip runs along Duisburger Strasse to Krefelder Strasse.
Despite limited access, the Mombach Quelle is a protected natural monument. It is also a reminder of Stuttgart’s rich geological history. It shows how natural resources contribute to the city’s identity.
Though we can’t directly touch the Quelltopf, we can appreciate its significance. The Mombach Quelle quietly provides water. It sustains local baths and parks. It is a hidden gem. The Mombach Quelle symbolizes Stuttgart’s deep connection to the earth.
