Is it possible for a mountain to be both challenging and charming? Here at Mo Lor Shan, it certainly is. Mo Lor Shan is not just a geographical feature. It is a destination that attracts hikers with its unique blend of accessibility and natural beauty.

Many residents of Shenzhen may not immediately recognize the name Mo Lor Shan. Yet, it holds a special place in the hearts of those who love hiking. It is known for being easy to climb and safe. Mo Lor Shan also boasts beautiful and varied scenery. You will find clear streams and lush woods here. Chinese plum blossoms add color to the landscape. One of the area’s largest waterfalls is also found here.

The trails on Mo Lor Shan are not paved. Still, the climb is not too hard. The summit is only half the height of Shenzhen’s highest peak, Wutong Mountain.

Lan Chou Gu, from Shenzhen’s largest online outdoor club, Mofang, once captured the essence of Mo Lor Shan. He wrote that many Shenzheners have fallen in love with hiking on Mo Lor Shan. He wondered who loves hiking but has not climbed Mo Lor Shan.

Most trips to Mo Lor Shan start at Diecuihu Reservoir. It is only 15 minutes from Xiaomeisha beach. They often end at Dameisha beach. Various routes lead to the summit. The most appealing one follows a stream.

The stream is shallow. Boulders act like natural steps. You can test your balance by jumping from boulder to boulder. Some boulders are pointed and far apart. Other places require scrambling over, squeezing between, and sliding down them.

Falling into the water on a nice day is not a disaster. Just be careful because your shoes can get wet and slippery. After heavy rain, the water flows fast. Rapids can carry you downstream. Despite the challenges, hiking up the stream is refreshing.

Even on hot summer days, the tree cover keeps you cool. The sound of water splashing adds to the tranquility. Looking down, you will see mountains stretching out before you. The city seems far away.

If the stream becomes too difficult, there is a mountain trail nearby. It feels like a temperate forest. It is cool, damp, lush and filled with the sound of rushing water.

Maluan Waterfall is one of the largest in the Shenzhen area. It is about 16 meters high. There are also smaller falls. Some hikers enjoy watching the waterfalls or swimming in the cool water. Rock climbers practice their skills on the cliffs beside the waterfalls.

Mo Lor Shan is famous for its plum blossom trees. They bloom in January. The Plum Blossom Pavilion at the summit offers great views. You can see the blue sea and the red and white plum blossoms.

Starting your hike around 10 AM will get you to the Plum Blossom Pavilion by midday. You can enjoy a relaxing lunch near the small village. It is about a 30-minute walk from the pavilion.

You might be able to buy farm produce from villagers. You can even cook at their houses. If you are lucky, you can get a chicken raised by farmers. Do not expect to charge your phone because most houses do not have electricity.

So, come and experience the unique charm of Mo Lor Shan. Enjoy the easy climb, the beautiful scenery, and the refreshing streams. Just remember to come quickly. A golf course is being built on it. This may soon change its natural beauty.
