Gazing upon Minnatonka Falls, one might wonder about its rather unassuming presence. Minnatonka Falls isn’t a roaring cascade. It’s a gentle waterfall nestled within the tranquil Red Gum Park in Bullaburra, in the heart of the Blue Mountains. It may not be the most dramatic waterfall in the region. But Minnatonka Falls holds a unique charm, especially after a good rain. The water tumbles down moss-covered rocks, surrounded by lush rainforest ferns and the towering Coachwood trees. It’s a picturesque scene that offers a peaceful escape from the everyday. This unique waterfall holds the distinction of being the only named waterfall in Bullaburra. Although, there’s also the lesser-known Lawson Cave Falls to the north, it hasn’t received official recognition. Minnatonka Falls is a bit of a hidden gem. There are a few different paths winding through Red Gum Reserve leading to the falls, and it’s not uncommon to have the place entirely to yourself. The quickest route is from Boronia Road. The path skirts a property line before venturing into the bush, descending to cross Minnatonka Creek just above the waterfall. To reach the base, you follow the track a bit further and look for a subtle trail veering off to the left. It might be a little overgrown in spots. But it’s easy enough to follow and leads you across the creek again. There you’ll find the falls just upstream. The walk to Minnatonka Falls is short and sweet, easily doable in under half an hour. If you’re looking for a longer adventure, the track continues to the Red Gum Park Picnic Area. You can also access the falls and picnic area from De Quency Road, Cottle Road, or the very end of Boronia Road. It is worth remembering to check your boots for leeches after visiting the falls. The damp environment they thrive in can make them a common sight in the area.
