How many animals do you think live in a truly gigantic zoo? Welcome to the Sao Paulo Zoo the largest zoo in all of Brazil. It’s a sprawling 82 hectares of land originally part of the vast Atlantic Forest. Imagine exploring this incredible place.
This amazing zoo opened in March 1958. It wasn’t always easy getting started though. Heavy rains delayed the opening. The very first animals came from private circuses. Lions camels bears and elephants joined Brazilian wildlife like jaguars and cock-of-the-rock birds. One very unusual resident was Cacareco a rhinoceros who was even elected a city councilor.
Today the Sao Paulo Zoo boasts over 3200 animals. That’s a lot of animals. There are 102 mammal species 216 bird species and many more reptiles amphibians and invertebrates. The enclosures are designed to mimic their natural habitats. It’s truly a conservation success story.
The zoo also has a huge farm. This farm produces vegetables and materials for the animals and their enclosures. It even provides extra space for mating. There’s a nursery for cubs rejected by their mothers. There are also incubators for bird and reptile eggs. Education is key. The zoo has a library with over 4000 books for the public.
The Sao Paulo Zoo is a pioneer in Brazil’s wildlife recovery programs. They work to save endangered species. Lion tamarins hyacinth macaws even snow leopards find refuge here. Since 1994 the zoo holds the Guinness World Record. It also has the highest environmental management classification from IBAMA. In 2001 a new section Zoo Safari opened.
