Robert Milson’s legacy whispers through the waters. This is Milsons Passage. A quiet haven on the Hawkesbury River.

Milsons Passage isn’t just a name. It’s a story etched into the very landscape. It’s a waterway that separates Milson Island from the mainland. Before 1976 it was known as The Gutter or South Channel. But the name Milsons Passage honours Robert Milson. Between 1863 and 1869 he bought the island and land on the western shore. He lived there. His father James Milson owned land at Milsons Point on Sydney Harbour. A family connection across the waters.

Houses began to appear along the western shore. This was especially true after a significant land sale in 1939. The residents formed a Progress Association. They wanted better infrastructure. They fought for a road from Kangaroo Point. That road never materialized. However electricity arrived between 1942 and 1943. A small victory in a remote setting.

Today Milsons Passage retains its charm. A small community dependent on rainwater for water. The mail arrives daily via riverboat. A unique postal service. Shops are non-existent. Food and supplies arrive by boat. Even garbage removal depends on boats. It is a community bound by water.

Imagine weekenders arriving by boat. They gather in their charming cottages. They enjoy the quiet beauty of the river. The passage itself is a constant reminder of the past. It is a pathway. Boats navigate it constantly. This continues the legacy. Robert Milson’s legacy lives on in the gentle lapping of the water against the shore. In the quiet hum of life. Milsons Passage remains a special place. A unique testament to a river community.
