Doesn’t “Milson Park” sound nice? It is more than just a pleasant green space. It holds a piece of North Sydney’s history. The Milson Park Plaque marks a spot with a story to tell.

Milson Park was officially dedicated as public parkland in 1898. Back then it was known as Kirribilli Park. The park we see now sits on land reclaimed from Careening Cove. Imagine the changes this area has seen.

The name “Milson Park” came later in 1912. It was a tribute to Arthur G. Milson. He was the Mayor of North Sydney. Arthur served from 1909 to 1912 and again from 1913 to 1914. So the Milson Park Plaque is dedicated to him.

Arthur Milson wasn’t just any mayor. He was a descendant of James Milson. James was one of North Sydney’s earliest land grantees. Think of the Milson family’s long connection to this area.

James Milson was a free settler from Lincolnshire. He settled near what we now know as Milsons Point. James established a successful business. He supplied ships with stone ballast and fresh water. He also sold produce from his dairy, orchard, and vegetable gardens.

Milson Park provides a beautiful view. From here you can see the northern end of the Sydney Harbour Bridge. It rises above the Kirribilli skyline. This park has always been a wonderful place for children to play.

The park used to have swings and a slippery dip. There were also seesaws and tall metal ladders. Paths wound through the park. Flat grassy spaces were perfect for games.

Giant Cabbage Tree palms still grow here. They make you feel quite small. Careening Cove lies at the end of Milson Park. Sailors once beached their boats here to make repairs.

The Milson Park Plaque reminds us of Arthur G. Milson. He was a dedicated mayor. He was part of a family that helped shape North Sydney. The park and its plaque connect us to the past. This is a story of community and remembrance.
