Before Milperra Bridge existed there was no easy way to cross the Georges River between Moorebank and Milperra. Imagine the inconvenience. People had to rely on a punt a small boat for crossing. This was in the early 1920s. The need for a proper bridge became apparent as the communities grew.
Milperra Bridge itself is a vital artery linking Bankstown and Liverpool. It sits nestled between Henry Lawson Drive and Bankstown Airport. Newbridge Road runs across it. This road continues as Canterbury and Milperra Roads. The current bridge stands tall a concrete giant replacing a much older and narrower truss bridge. That older bridge was built around 1930. It served the community well but couldn’t handle the increasing traffic. It finally reached its limit needing replacement.
The initial designs for the original bridge weren’t perfect. The proposed height above the water was just 4 meters. This caused concern among locals who wanted a taller bridge. Commercial boats and sporting activities needed more clearance. The Department of Main Roads eventually increased the height to 5 meters. This was a compromise.
The construction of the current Milperra Bridge was completed in 1965. It’s a pre-stressed concrete structure. It has three spans. Two piers stand in the water supporting the bridge. Seven lanes now carry the increased traffic. It’s a significant improvement. It demonstrates the growth and development of the area over the years.
Standing here today on Milperra Bridge you can sense the history. You can see the bustling roads below. The bridge connects communities. It has witnessed the changing needs and growth of Sydney.
