Imagine fertile farmland sprawling where Miller now stands. This is a tale of how a farm became a suburb. Miller, a suburb of Sydney, owes its name to Peter Miller. He was a farmer who owned a vast tract of land here.

Peter Miller’s farm existed for over 60 years. His original house was named Poplar Hall. It sat near Cabramatta Creek. In 1880, part of the farm was sold to a syndicate. Peter Miller then built a new home atop Miller’s Hill. The farm thrived with a dairy, orchard, and vineyard.

Over time, more houses sprung up. These homes accommodated Miller’s descendants. Peter Miller lived on his farm until he passed away in 1922. His wife died in 1929. Her funeral was memorable as the last in the district to use a horse-drawn hearse.

After World War II, the farm changed hands. The NSW Housing Commission acquired it. This acquisition was part of a larger plan. The plan was the development of the Green Valley housing estate. Miller became one of six suburbs within this estate. The Green Valley estate aimed to address an affordable housing crisis.

The transformation of Miller occurred rapidly. The first sod was turned on August 3, 1961. From 1961 to 1965, Miller’s urban infrastructure took shape. Miller was officially gazetted as a suburb on April 7, 1972. Miller was now a suburb within the City of Liverpool.

Miller also holds an educational claim to fame. Miller was the location of the first branch library of Liverpool City Library. It opened its doors on April 17, 1967.

Today, Miller is a vibrant community. The 2021 census recorded a population of 3,374 people. Miller Central serves as the main shopping hub. It boasts a Woolworths, Aldi, and approximately 32 other shops.

Miller stands as a testament to evolution. From a single farm owned by Peter Miller. To a bustling suburb within Sydney. It embodies growth and change. The legacy of Peter Miller lives on.
