Military Academy Karlberg is more than just an academy. It is the oldest military academy in the world still in its original location. Established in 1792 within Karlberg Palace it has trained generations of officers. Initially housing both army and navy cadets it later separated their training. They were reunited in 1999. Air force officers joined in 2003.
King Gustav III initially aimed to establish the academy at Ulriksdal Palace. His untimely death in 1792 changed those plans. Queen Sophia Magdalena preferred Ulriksdal as a private residence. Karlberg Palace a former royal summer residence became the perfect alternative. The palace itself has witnessed significant changes. It was enlarged during the regency of Gustav IV Adolf to accommodate the growing number of cadets. Carl Christoffer Gjörwell designed the extensions. These elongated pavilions give the palace its distinctive character.
The Academy has a rich history of traditions. Since 1817 it has received six colours from the King. These colours are symbols of pride and honour. Each one represents a milestone in the academy’s history. The most recent was presented in 2021 by King Carl XVI Gustaf. The Academy also boasts a unique coat of arms and a medal of merit.
More than just military training Military Academy Karlberg also plays a significant ceremonial role. It supports the government parliament and military leadership. Today the academy trains approximately 300 officers annually. It employs around 150 people. The grounds are open to the public a blend of history and accessibility.
