“A Slovak giant’s legacy” they whispered. Here before us stands the Milan Rastislav Stefanik Plaque. This unassuming granite plaque tells a remarkable story. It commemorates the visit of Milan Rastislav Stefanik to Sydney in June 1911. He was a remarkable man a Slovak astronomer politician diplomat pilot and even a French general. He co-founded the Czechoslovak Republic.

Stefanik’s journey took him across the globe. He was observing a total solar eclipse in Oceania. Australia was unique. It was the only country from his diary without a monument. This plaque finally rectifies that. His visit included a stop at the Jesuit Observatory at St Ignatius’ College Riverview. The observatory surprisingly remains in its original state from 1908. It is still used for student education today.

The plaque’s unveiling was a grand event. It happened on December 10 2022. The Slovak Ambassador Tomas Ferko presided. Representatives from the diplomatic corps business partners and the Slovak community attended. The Ambassador expressed gratitude to the college rector Father Tom Renshaw SJ. He also thanked Martin Siman of Orion Financial for sponsoring the project. The event marked the 111th anniversary of Stefanik’s astronomical observations in the Southern Hemisphere.
