It was formed in 2004 by merging two separate shrines Miho and Kashima. Now it houses multiple deities. They are said to bless agriculture health and learning. One deity Takemikazuchi no Kami the god of thunder and swords is even believed to have participated in the first sumo match.

The shrine’s design is carefully considered. Guardian statues called komainu stand watch. One unique pair shares a single pedestal. Another rare sight is a komainu cub being nursed. The shrine features a temizuya ablution well for ritual cleansing. A small green space adds to the serene atmosphere.

Kashima Shrine one of the originals existed during the Heian period between the eighth and twelfth centuries. It was known to provide relief from whooping cough. Though the original structures are long gone the spiritual essence remains strong.

Visitors can purchase goshuin red stamps. They serve as proof of pilgrimage. Many visitors collect these stamps. A small fee of JPY300 applies.
