Picture Midori Ward a vibrant tapestry woven from threads of history and innovation. Midori Ward is one of Yokohama’s 18 wards. It sits in eastern Kanagawa Prefecture. Much of Midori is hilly and less densely populated than other parts of Yokohama. The flatter northeast area is near the Tsurumi River. This river forms a boundary with Tsuzuki-ku.

Before it became the Midori Ward we know today this area was part of Tsuzuki District in Musashi Province. During the Edo period it was rural farmland. It was tenryo territory directly controlled by the Tokugawa shogunate. After the Meiji Restoration it became part of Kanagawa Prefecture. Sericulture was a key industry during the Meiji period.

In 1939 Tsuzuki District was annexed by Yokohama. Midori Ward officially became an independent ward in 1969. A portion of Midori was later transferred to Seya Ward. In 1994 Midori-ku was further divided creating the Midori-ku Aoba-ku and Tsuzuki-ku we know today.

Today Midori Ward serves as a regional commercial center. It’s also a bedroom community for central Yokohama and Tokyo. Some rice farming continues. Major industries include food processing electronics and precision manufacturing.

Transportation is key. The JR East Yokohama Line runs through Midori Ward. Specific stations include Kamoi Nakayama Tokaichiba and Nagatsuta. The Tokyu Den-en-toshi Line and Kodomonokuni Line also serve the ward. The Yokohama City Transportation Bureau Green Line adds another layer to the transportation network. Several prefectural roads including Routes 109 139 and 140 connect Midori Ward to the broader region.

Education is vital. The Nagatsuta campus of the Tokyo Institute of Technology is located here. Showa University and Toyo Eiwa University are also in Midori Ward. Kanagawa Prefecture and Yokohama City operate various public schools. Kirigaoka Gakuen is a notable combined elementary and junior high school. Even the India International School in Japan has a campus within Midori Ward.

Midori Ward boasts notable residents. Masahiro Inoue the actor and Masahiro Matsuoka the idol both hail from this ward. Their success reflects the dynamic spirit of this community. Midori Ward is a place where history innovation and vibrant life intertwine. It is a place where the past shapes the present and the future promises much more.
