Straddling the rugged spine of Lantau Island, Middle Kau Nga Ling beckons the adventurous. This isn’t just a hike; it’s a scramble, a climb, a test of wills against the elements. Middle Kau Nga Ling, also known as Middle Dog Teeth, is part of the infamous Kau Nga Ling, or Dog Teeth Ridge. Its sharp, jagged peaks resemble the teeth of a canine, a fitting image for this challenging climb. This range offers three routes: West, Middle, and East. Middle Kau Nga Ling sits between the notoriety of West Dog Teeth, known as the most difficult, and the relative ease of East Dog Teeth. This ascent is not for the faint of heart. The path is steep and exposed, demanding respect from even seasoned hikers. The trailhead begins at Shek Pik Reservoir, accessible by bus from Tung Chung or Mui Wo. From Tung Chung, take bus 23 or 11. From Mui Wo, bus 1 to Tai O will get you there. A taxi from Tung Chung is also an option. Look for the Shek Pik Police Stand stop, then walk back towards the trailhead. The first part of the journey is deceivingly tranquil. The Shek Pik Country Trail offers shaded stairs and a dirt path. But don’t be lulled into a false sense of security. Soon, the red warning sign appears, marking the turnoff to Middle Kau Nga Ling. Beyond this point, the challenge begins. The trail becomes overgrown, demanding you push through shrubs and branches. Long sleeves and pants are recommended to avoid scratches. The real adventure starts as you ascend the “teeth” themselves. Each peak is a rocky scramble, requiring you to use your hands. The views from these rocky perches are breathtaking. Shek Pik Reservoir stretches out below, a tranquil oasis against the rugged terrain. On clear days, the Soko Islands punctuate the horizon. As you continue the ascent, you’ll encounter the “Lifeline,” or “One Line of Survivability.” This narrow passage, with a rock wall on one side and a sheer drop on the other, is the most treacherous part of Middle Kau Nga Ling. A chain is provided for support, but the exposure is still unnerving. After conquering the Lifeline, you’ll eventually intersect with Lantau Trail, Section 3. From here, you can choose to continue to Lantau Peak, adding another challenge, or descend to Ngong Ping for a less strenuous finish. The descent from Middle Kau Nga Ling can be equally challenging. Loose gravel makes the path slippery, demanding careful footing. Whether you continue to Lantau Peak or descend to Ngong Ping, Middle Kau Nga Ling offers an unforgettable adventure. It’s a journey that tests your limits, rewards you with stunning views, and leaves you with a sense of accomplishment.
