The history of Messiah United Methodist Church starts in 1964. New homes, businesses, and schools were transforming West Springfield. It changed from a rural outpost into the Washington suburb we know today. Over six decades, Messiah has done extraordinary things. It follows Jesus’ example with God’s guidance. There are myriad examples of love for persons. The church serves the community, the region, the nation, and the world. They disciple friends and strangers. They offer comfort in times of need. They preach and celebrate the mystery of God’s love. His love is at work in our lives and the life of the world.
Messiah United Methodist Church warmly welcomes everyone. They wish to express their Christian faith. It is an inclusive community. The church encourages each person to be true to their self-understanding. Their understanding is shaped by their faith in Jesus Christ. The congregation is a vibrant and diverse group. They dedicate themselves to following Jesus. They embrace the challenges of Christian faith. Messiah commits to nurturing children, youth, and the wider community. They do this through their faith and actions.
Messiah’s mission is to develop loving relationships. These relationships are with God and others. They follow Christ’s example. Their vision is to establish Messiah. It will be a leading church community of Christian hope and healing. Currently, Messiah is rejuvenating its beautiful Sanctuary. Services are held in the Fellowship Hall during this time. The congregation sits in the round. They enjoy acoustic music. Members share testimony and connect with one another. These changes reveal the heart of worship. They consider who they are as a community of faith. How do they connect with God and one another? Who is God calling them to be as a church in this community?
Messiah offers a special sermon series called Building on the Basics. It helps rediscover all that worship can be. In-person services are offered. They also stream their 11:15 service every Sunday. Messiah also organizes mission trips. For example, they had a Spring Mission Trip to Wilmington, DE.
Messiah believes in Jesus Christ. He was truly man. Divine and human natures are perfectly and inseparably united in him. Jesus is the incarnation of God. God sent Jesus to save the world. Jesus preached good news to the poor. He proclaimed freedom for prisoners and recovery of sight for the blind. He released the oppressed. Jesus lived, suffered, and died on the cross. He rose from the dead. He ascended into heaven. He will come again to judge the living and the dead. He is the Light of the World. He is the Bread of Heaven. He is the Shepherd. He seeks to save, nurture, and guide.
Messiah welcomes all. The church wants everyone to feel like a servant of Jesus. There is something for everyone to be involved with here. The staff is outstanding. They guide individuals in paths they may not have considered. They are always appreciative of what you do. There’s a positive, giving energy. Sunday mornings are always uplifting. This is due to the message, music, and people.
