“Did you know that Edgar A. Merkle, founder of Merkle Press established this area?” That’s right we are at the Merkle Natural Resources Management Area and Visitor Center. This 1670-acre wildlife refuge is a true gem. It’s managed by the Maryland Department of Natural Resources. This is a crucial wintering ground and breeding area for Canada geese.
Let’s explore the Frank Oslislo Visitors Center. It is usually open on weekends. Inside, you’ll find exhibits about the life of Canada Geese and local natural history. You might even spot some live reptiles and amphibians.
Imagine this in the History Corner. There are tales of the War of 1812 on the Patuxent River. Also learn about the local Native American heritage. How about the Visitor Center’s large indoor viewing area? Binoculars and field guides are available for you. The large windows offer amazing views of the bird feeding station. Enjoy views of the garden and wildlife ponds.
Merkle Natural Resources Management Area has a five-mile Critical Area Driving Tour. It is perfect for birding by car. The tour is open to cars on Sundays only. Pedestrians and bikers can use it daily.
There are several hiking trails here too. The Poplar Springs Trail is 2.3 miles long. The Mounds Trail is another 2.3-mile option. Finally, there is the Paw Paw Trail at 1.2 miles.
Consider the Paw Paw Trail. It is a relatively flat family-friendly trail. It winds past streams and ponds. It passes through forests and fields. Watch for the green oval paw paw fruits in the fall.
Also think about the Mounds Trail. The large man-made mounds are believed to be early boundary markers. They may be defenses built during the War of 1812.
Hunting is permitted at Merkle Natural Resources Management Area. About 1300 acres are open for deer archery hunting. Daily reservations are required. A maximum of 20 hunters are allowed each day.
Enjoy the sweeping views of the Patuxent River. The landscape features agricultural fields and woodlands. Drive along the entrance lane from Fenno Road. Pass through the mature hardwood forest.
Don’t miss the Chesapeake Bay Critical Area Driving Tour. It begins at Selby’s Landing in Patuxent River Park. The wooden trestle bridge is a highlight. It crosses Mattaponi Creek. Stop at the observation platform. Enjoy wide views of the Patuxent River.
Remember the White Oak Landing canoe camp. It provides excellent views of the marshes. Watch for rails and other marsh dwellers. Carry your scope when you climb the tower.
The Merkle Natural Resources Management Area is a part of the Chesapeake Bay Gateways Network. It also has special designations. Parts of it are within the Jug Bay Important Bird Area.
The Patuxent Riverkeeper organization is nearby. They rent canoes and kayaks. They also host public events. The Merkle Natural Resources Management Area is on the Patuxent Water Trail.
