Sculpted against the sky, the Memory Lines Statue stands as a poignant reminder. It’s a tribute to Australian workers lost in the pursuit of their livelihoods. The Memory Lines Statue, located here in Darling Harbour, was unveiled on International Workers’ Memorial Day, April 28th, 2004. Commissioned by the Labor Council, it commemorates those who never returned home from work. The statue also acknowledges lives lost due to work-related illnesses. The design, a two-story high structure, is rich in symbolism. It represents the cycle of a working life. The void within the sculpture speaks to the loss felt by families and communities. The stainless steel poles rising from the structure represent the lingering “memory lines” of those lost. These poles serve a unique purpose on remembrance days. Visitors can attach memory cards and photographs to the poles. They become personalized tributes within the larger memorial. The Memory Lines Statue was sponsored by WorkCover New South Wales and Unions NSW. It was unveiled by John Della Bosca, the Minister for Commerce. Artist Ingrid Skirka’s creation stands as a powerful testament. It ensures that the contributions and sacrifices of workers are never forgotten. The Memory Lines Statue serves as a space for remembrance. It’s a place for reflection and a symbol of respect for the workers who shaped Australia.
