“This is the Memoriale Gino Lisa Plaque.” The words seem to hang in the air, echoing with solemnity. Gino Lisa, an Italian aviator, hero of the Great War, and true son of Turin. Here, on this plaque etched with his name, a story unfolds. Born in 1896, Gino was a young man when his country entered the war. He was drawn to the cause, motivated by Gabriele D’Annunzio, the famous poet who became a champion of Italian intervention. Gino enlisted in the army and trained to fly Caproni bombers, which were like flying fortresses, carrying powerful bombs to smash enemy positions. His bravery was renowned. He flew countless missions, battling over the skies of the Alps, the Adriatic, and the Italian front. He became a skilled pilot, known for his daring in the air. Unfortunately, his life was cut short during a mission in 1917. He was chasing a bomber under attack when his plane was hit. Gino managed to crash land in the mountains, but he perished – a sad ending for a hero who risked his life for his country. Gino Lisa’s story is etched on this plaque, a reminder of his bravery and the sacrifices made during the war.
