Memorial of Doppo Stone

The Memorial of Doppo commemorates the life and work of Kunikida Doppo, a renowned Japanese author of the Meiji period. He is best known for his works “Musashino” and “Kamakura Fujin.” The memorial itself is a simple yet elegant structure. A stone slab, bearing a portrait of Doppo and inscription, is inlaid on a natural stone. This stone was brought from Yugawara, a place Doppo held dear. Dr. Makino Eiichi penned the title lettering. Mitsuhashi Itoji painted the portrait. The inscription speaks of Doppo’s struggle with tuberculosis, a battle he fought here in Chigasaki, finding solace in the desolate sea. Doppo, whose real name was Tetsuo Kunikida, was a key figure in the development of Japanese naturalism. He initially gained recognition for his romantic poetry and short stories, often reflecting his deep connection with nature.
