President Harding himself turned a spadeful of earth. That’s right here at the National Baptist Memorial Church. This magnificent structure didn’t just appear. It’s a testament to faith community and a remarkable history. For many years before its construction there were discussions about creating a Bible School. A Sunday school and meeting place were even held in a private home. Later a lot was purchased for 30000 dollars. The congregation outgrew their initial meeting place so they built a church. This church then became the foundation for a much grander vision.

In 1917 a movement began to create a national Baptist memorial. The idea was to honor Roger Williams a pioneer of religious freedom. The initial design included a prominent statue of him. Both Northern and Southern Baptist Conventions contributed significantly to the project. The Washington area also pledged to raise a substantial amount.

Then came the groundbreaking ceremony on April 23 1921. It was a momentous occasion. President Harding himself was there. He participated in the symbolic act of turning the first sod. Even a young boy the son of Reverend Gove Griffith Johnson played a role. He pulled the wagon that carried the first scoop of earth. Four direct descendants of Roger Williams also attended. The architect Egerton Swartwout designed a building inspired by English architecture. The church is a beautiful white limestone edifice. Its classic silhouette is instantly recognizable.

The interior is equally impressive. The tower forms a circular channel within the hexagonal auditorium. The main entrance faces Sixteenth Street. A classic balustrade crowns it. The low dome of the auditorium is visible behind it. The church also has an education building built in 1941. The entire complex was renovated in 1950. It’s now part of the Meridian Hill Historic District a testament to its enduring significance. This church stands as a beautiful symbol of faith and a national landmark. It represents the convergence of religious freedom and architectural artistry. It is more than just a place of worship. It is a living testament to a rich history.
