Have you ever wondered about the life of a man who lived through tumultuous times, a man whose name became synonymous with Polish journalism? Here, before you, is the Melchior Wańkowicz Plaque. It’s a simple marker, yet it speaks volumes about a life both extraordinary and challenging.

Melchior Wańkowicz was a Polish army officer, a popular writer, and a courageous journalist and publisher. He was born in Kalużyce, Minsk Governorate of the Russian Empire, on January 10, 1892. A young man during the turbulent period of the Polish independence movements he fought in the First World War as an officer in the Polish I Corps under General Dowbor-Muśnicki. His life was marked by both personal and political turmoil. His father, a freedom fighter in the 1863 January Uprising, died the year he was born. And his mother followed just three years later.

Wańkowicz began his career as a press department chief in the Polish Ministry of Internal Affairs. He later founded his own publishing agency, “Rój.” His publishing house published works both by established authors and new ones, giving voice to a new generation of Polish writers. He also worked in advertising, coining the famous slogan “cukier krzepi” (Sugar Invigorates).

He is best known for his courageous reporting for the Polish Armed Forces in the West during World War II, and specifically for his book about the battle of Monte Cassino. From the 1943 to 1946 he was a war correspondent, and he later immortalized the battle of Monte Cassino in a three-volume book. His reporting from the war years is powerful and gripping, a reminder of the challenges faced by the Polish nation.

The Melchior Wańkowicz Plaque is a reminder of the bravery of this man. He was imprisoned when the communist regime gained power in Poland, for his opposition to censorship and his strong support of the Polish Armed Forces in the West. He faced accusations of spreading anti-Polish propaganda abroad for his reporting. He died in Warsaw on September 10, 1974.

This plaque serves as a tribute to a man who stood up for what he believed in, a constant defender of freedom of speech and a tireless champion for the truth.
