Established in 1964 Meisei University stands proudly before you. Its history stretches back further though. The university grew from the Meisei Gakuen Institute founded in 1951. This institute oversaw several schools established since 1923. Meisei University opened with a single faculty: Physical Sciences and Engineering. This was just the beginning.

Over the years more faculties blossomed. The Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences joined in 1965. A Department of Economics followed in 1966. Graduate schools soon appeared too. A Graduate School of Humanities and Social Sciences opened in 1971. A Graduate School of Physical Sciences and Engineering followed in 1972.

The university continued to expand. In 1992 two more faculties opened. These were the Faculty of Japanese Culture and the Faculty of Informatics. A Graduate School of Informatics was added in 1998. Meisei University boasts two campuses now. One is in Hino the other in Ome. Both are in western Tokyo. The Hino campus is large covering over 270000 square meters. The Ome campus is even bigger at over 820000 square meters.

Meisei University is more than just buildings and classrooms. It has a unique focus. It emphasizes nurturing students through personal contact. It stresses improving mental abilities through focused thinking. It also promotes practical education with real-world application. This emphasis on practical skills led to the creation of its School of Education. This school includes an internship program. Students from any faculty can pursue teaching qualifications.

The university even has an astronomical observation dome. There is also a performing arts theatre. It’s called Shakespeare Hall. This theatre is modeled after London’s original Globe Theatre. Meisei University is also notable for pioneering postgraduate distance education in Japan.

One of Meisei University’s most famous alumni is Naoki Urasawa. This renowned Japanese manga artist is a testament to the university’s impact on the creative world. Meisei University is a place where education innovation and history intertwine. It is a significant part of Tokyo’s landscape. It’s a place where countless stories continue to unfold.
