Hidden within Tokyo’s Minato ward, Meiji Gakuin High School whispers tales of transformation. Meiji Gakuin High School isn’t just a school. It’s a living testament to the fusion of East and West, a bridge between tradition and modernity. The school’s story begins in 1863, not in Tokyo, but in Yokohama, with the Hepburn Academy. Founded by Dr. and Mrs. James Curtis Hepburn, the academy aimed to provide moral education grounded in Christian faith. This principle, coupled with respect for individual growth, formed the bedrock of what would become Meiji Gakuin High School. The academy, along with the Brown Academy, laid the foundations for an institution that would shape generations. In 1887, the Tokyo government granted permission for Meiji Gakuin to establish its campus in Shirokane, its present location. The school initially offered a general secondary education course, later evolving into a five-year middle school. Following World War II, the system changed again, creating the current structure of a three-year middle school and a three-year high school. For many years, Meiji Gakuin was a boys’ school, reflecting the societal norms of the time. However, in 1991, the high school opened its doors to female students, marking a significant step towards inclusivity. Meiji Gakuin High School celebrated its 150th anniversary in 2013, a testament to its enduring legacy. Today, Meiji Gakuin High School stands as a symbol of educational excellence and cross-cultural understanding. The school continues to nurture individuals who can empathize with others and stand on their own two feet, principles established over a century ago. The spirit of the Hepburns lives on in the halls of Meiji Gakuin High School, reminding us of the power of education and the enduring strength of human connection.
