The sun beats down on the Ganges River, shimmering off the water and adding a touch of warm gold to the scene. You stand at a wide, brick-paved ghat, Mehfa Ghat. Mehfa Ghat sits peacefully between Ganesh Ghat and Ram Ghat, a peaceful escape from the cacophony of the city around it. The ghat is built of bricks and cement, its steps leading gently down to the water. Look closer and you’ll see a story woven into the bricks. Before 1960, this place was part of Ram Ghat. A wealthy merchant from Kolkata named Ballabh Ram Shaligram Mehta purchased this area and transformed it.
Mehfa Ghat has two noticeable structures. One is a hospital, built in 1962. The other is a Sangved Sanskrit Vidyalaya, a school dedicated to the Sang Veda, where students live a life of strict discipline, following a code of celibacy, chastity, yoga, and meditation. This school is unique in all of India. Mehfa Ghat has no particular religious importance, which is why it is so quiet. Many of the people living here are from the Marathi community.
The ghat feels like a hidden oasis, a quiet place where you can feel the peaceful flow of the Ganges River.
