What secrets does the medieval village Řepora hold? This seemingly abandoned village, nestled on Prague’s outskirts, whispers tales of a time long past. Řepora, formerly known as Tuležim, stands as a poignant reminder of 14th-century Bohemia. It was built in 1999 within the remains of a former brickyard’s clay pit. The builders meticulously used period-accurate materials and construction methods. This dedication to authenticity created a truly immersive experience. However, it also made the village vulnerable to fire.

Řepora wasn’t merely a collection of buildings. It was designed as a “living museum,” a vibrant depiction of medieval life. Within its palisades, visitors could explore a bustling marketplace, a humble potter’s workshop, a blacksmith’s forge, and even a fisherman’s dwelling. The heart of Řepora boasted a traditional tavern and a small church with its own graveyard. These spaces offered glimpses into daily life, social gatherings, and spiritual practices of the past. Just outside the village stood a pre-Christian era cultic site with ancient idols, hinting at an even older history. The inclusion of these elements, along with actual livestock, provided a unique interactive encounter with history.

Sadly, Řepora’s story takes a tragic turn. Starting in 2003, a series of fires ravaged the village. One blaze in 2003 destroyed three buildings. Another fire, attributed to careless heating practices by those maintaining the site, caused further damage. The most devastating fires in 2019 and 2020 extinguished the remaining embers of the project, leaving the site abandoned. Today, Řepora remains closed to the public. While its physical presence lingers as a haunting reminder of what once was, the spirit of the medieval village persists in photographs and memories. Perhaps, one day, Řepora will rise from the ashes. Until then, its story serves as a reminder of the fragility of history and the power of human imagination to bring it to life, if only for a fleeting moment.
