Imagine female colonists seeking refuge in the 1830s. They were restricted at men’s pools. McIver Women’s Baths offered them privacy. Randwick Council developed the baths. They excavated the rock pool. Concrete walls were added for enclosure.
For a penny, women could enter McIver Women’s Baths. Another penny bought a towel and costume. Robert and Rose McIver managed the baths from 1918. By 1922, they shaped it into its present form. Rose McIver helped establish the Randwick and Coogee Ladies Amateur Swimming Club.
Swimming grew in popularity. However, women couldn’t train with men. McIver Women’s Baths became a training ground. Fanny Durack and Mina Wylie honed their skills here. They went on to win Olympic medals in 1912.
The baths faced challenges. In 1946, there was an application for mixed bathing. Objections came from Wylies Baths and a Mother Superior. They valued the privacy of McIver Women’s Baths.
