Gifted to Camden. That’s the story of Macarthur Park. A generous gift from Mrs Elizabeth Macarthur-Onslow. She and the Camden Park Estate presented this beautiful park to the citizens of Camden in 1905.

Macarthur Park opened officially in 1906. A large gathering of residents celebrated the occasion. Alderman A D Little spoke at the ceremony. He called the opening a very important event in Camden’s history. The council asked Mrs Macarthur-Onslow to plant a tree. Mrs Little another important figure in Camden planted a tree on the opposite side of the entrance gate. A fitting tribute to this extraordinary gift.

The park holds more than just pleasant memories. It houses Camden’s War Memorial. This memorial honours soldiers who fought in World War One. A shelter stands within the park. Built in 1913 it commemorates Mrs Elizabeth Macarthur-Onslow. Her legacy lives on within the park’s very heart.
