Mazhou Island

China Merchants Group had a vision. They wanted to expand their ship repair industry. So, they chose Mazhou Island as the location for their ambitious new shipyard. Mazhou Island sits at the mouth of the Pearl River, near Shenzhen and Hong Kong. This strategic location offers access to skilled labor, spare parts, and materials. The island itself spans an impressive 700,000 square meters. It boasts a 3,400-meter-long coastline, offering ample space for development. This new shipyard on Mazhou Island represents a significant investment of 2.4 billion RMB. The plan involves relocating two existing floating docks, a 70,000-ton class and a 30,000-ton class, to the island. They will construct two massive dry docks. One will handle vessels up to 300,000 dwt and the other even larger vessels exceeding 300,000 dwt. These dry docks will cater to various ship types, from ULCCs and VLCCs to large tankers, LNG carriers, ocean liners, and even massive container ships. The larger dry dock is specifically designed for repairs and conversions of ULCCs, VLCCs, FPSOs, FSOs, and boring platforms. The slightly smaller dry dock will handle repairs and conversions of other large vessels, including LNG carriers, ocean liners, and massive container ships. The shipyard also includes a dedicated construction site for offshore engineering, covering over 100,000 square meters with three berths. This specialized area is designed to support the annual production of five jack-up platforms. The Mazhou Island shipyard aims to become a world-class ship and ocean engineering repair base. It’s set to transform the region’s maritime industry.
