Built on the whispers of a vanished village, Mayfair Gardens stands as a testament to the ever-shifting landscape of Hong Kong. Mayfair Gardens wasn’t always the tranquil oasis you see today. It rose from the remnants of Sai Shan Village, a small community nestled against the slopes of Tsing Yi Island. Construction began in 1982, marking the birth of the first private housing estate on Tsing Yi. Imagine the transformation, the old village giving way to the modern lines of these eight residential blocks. Mayfair Gardens comprises Blocks 5 through 12. Interestingly, the original plans called for twelve blocks. However, the proposed Blocks 1 through 4 were deemed too close to a Mobil oil depot, sparking protests from islanders concerned about safety. This resulted in the cancellation of those blocks, a small victory for the residents and a testament to the power of community action in shaping Hong Kong’s development. The land designated for those lost blocks now houses a basketball court, tennis court, and a playground, allowing residents a glimpse of Victoria Harbour. Mayfair Gardens offers its residents a variety of amenities, including a private club, a swimming pool, a park, and even a small shopping mall. Picture yourself strolling through the mall, picking up groceries at Wellcome, grabbing a bite at Fairwood, or browsing the unique goods at 759 Store. The mall also boasts a selection of restaurants offering diverse cuisines, ensuring there’s something to satisfy every palate. While largely peaceful now, Mayfair Gardens carries a shadow. A tragic incident in 2008, the suicide of a young girl struggling with academic pressures, has led some to believe the estate is haunted. This adds a layer of poignant history to the modern façade.
